Cherry Audio Elka-X Synthesizer

The Cherry Audio Elka-X synthesizer pays homage to the legendary Synthex, an iconic Italian analog synthesizer crafted by Mario Maggi and produced by ELKA in the early 1980s. By faithfully capturing the essence of the original while enhancing its features, Elka-X offers the authentic Synthex experience at an affordable price.

The Synthex boasted unique and forward-thinking features that set it apart from its contemporaries. Its digitally-controlled analog oscillators ensured remarkable stability, while its flexible four-pole multimode filter provided versatile sound sculpting options. Unlike many synths of its time, the Synthex offered a 24 dB/oct lowpass mode, along with 6 and 12 dB/oct bandpass modes and a 12 dB/oct highpass mode, delivering a distinctive and robust tonal palette. Additionally, its built-in analog chorus effect added depth and richness to its sound.

Equipped with multitimbral capabilities, the Synthex allowed users to play two separate patches simultaneously in split or layer mode, making it a versatile tool for music production. It even featured an innovative four-track sequencer with real-time recording and transposition functionalities.

Despite its groundbreaking features, ELKA’s focus on home organs prevented the Synthex from gaining traction in the professional synthesizer market. While it garnered attention from notable musicians like Stevie Wonder, Geoff Downes, Keith Emerson, and Jean-Michel Jarre, the emergence of Yamaha’s DX digital synthesizers in 1983 overshadowed its success.

Despite its initial obscurity, the Synthex left a lasting impact on music history, with its distinctive bass tones featured prominently in Stevie Wonder’s “Skeletons” and used by artists like Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran and Peter Howell of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Today, the Elka-X synthesizer ensures that the legacy of the Synthex lives on, offering musicians the opportunity to explore its timeless sounds and capabilities.
