Sonivox releases Vocalizer Pro, a new MIDI-controlled audio effect plugin. The next-generation version of the Vocalizer MIDI-controlled audio effect.
In the lower part of the GUI, you will find a virtual keyboard with 88 keys, a pitch wheel, and a modulation wheel. Four buttons have been placed on the right-hand side, which can be used to determine the number of possible votes between four and a maximum of 16. The remaining buttons are used to recall or browse the presets. Patches you have created yourself can also be saved.
The names of the presets are displayed in a small field next to the buttons. The input and output signals of the Vocalizer can be adjusted in terms of their volume using the controls located in the middle. The output level is displayed on the left side of the upper third.
Two “Voice” sections, which can be activated separately, enrich the audio signal with the necessary overtone spectrum. In the primary voice, corresponding controls control the harmonic components, with the “Scale” control making a rough preselection. The effect strength of the Voice section is determined by the “Spread” control.
An important feature is that all parameters of the Primary Voice are duplicated. We will see in the practical part what the consequences are…The second part of the section, the Secondary Voice, adjusts the mood or the “tune” and its fine tuning (Fine Tune). Both the Primary and Secondary Voices have separate volume controls.
The filters of the Vocalizer are located below the Voice section. A total of five different filter types are available. The sound of the presets can be filtered using frequency, velocity, EQ, and saturation controls. An LFO with the two controls “Depth” and “Rate” provides additional manipulation options. The portamento knob is responsible for “gliding” from one pitch to the next – if this feature is activated, the vocalizer works exclusively monophonically.
A parametric EQ with low and high pass filters has found its home to the right of the filter. The four bands can be (de)activated separately. The edge steepness and the center frequencies can be continuously adjusted. However, the cut/boost values for the high- and low-pass filters are gridded, while the two middle bands are fully parametric with a cut/boost of +/-18 dB each.
The two effects Delay and Chorus are available above the EQ. If desired, the delay can be synchronized with the speed of the host DAW. Alternatively, a free value between 0 and 3000 milliseconds can be set for each stereo channel. The feedback values (0-100%), stereo panorama, and high and low pass (20 Hz – 20 kHz) is also infinitely adjustable. As usual, the amount of effect is adjusted using a mix control (dry/wet).
The chorus can be used to give the sound a light texture to extreme flanger-like sounds. The attributes delay, feedback, LFO depth, and rate can be adjusted here.
In order to reach your goal quickly in terms of sound, it makes sense to use one of the 30 vocal presets or the over 100 patches, some of which are experimental. These are divided into the categories of Guitars, Vocals, Drums, and “Anything”.
Therefore, this virtual instrument shows its tonal strengths when it comes to placing non-tonal sounds in a harmonic context. Regardless of whether the driving noise of a car, the barking of a dog, or the human voice is used.
Sonivox has certainly not reinvented the wheel with the Vocalizer, but its new way of working opens up a wide range of possibilities for the harmonious processing of any audio raw material.
I can well imagine that various music producers will discover the Vocalizer as “their” tool. The software could thus develop into a style-defining tool in pop music.
