Applied Acoustics Systems just released String Studio VS-3, a major update to the string oscillator synthesizer for Windows and Mac. Compared with the predecessor presented four years ago, String Studio VS-3 offers a number of new solutions.
Applied Acoustics Systems’ String Studio VS-3 is a virtual synthesizer that uses a collection of unique string oscillators instead of classic VCOs, DCOs and operators to produce the main sound. In the new version, the instrument finally works in two voices multi-timbral, so that fat sounds are easily possible. Thanks to the availability of two independent “engines” with the same adjustment possibilities.
Also new are two performance modulators per layer, with which expressive soundscapes become playable. The multi-effect modules now also support equalizer, compressor, guitar amp, and a sports reverb. Furthermore, according to the manufacturer, the filters have been improved and the browser has been supplemented with a category function.
The included sound bank has also grown, with 227 fresh sounds integrated by top sound designers such as Richard Devine, Christian Laffitte, Thiago Pinheiro and Daniel Stawczyk. Of course, the synthesizer is also compatible with the patches of its predecessor String Studio VS-2, so that existing sounds can be played easily.
As before, the String Studio VS-3 graphical interface offers various tabs offering access to specific functions and parameters. In the case of a new synthesizer, for each “engine” they are PLAY, SYNTH, EFFECTS and BROWSE. The first window gives, among others access to UNISON and GLIDE functions or keyboard settings. Direct editing of selected functions is possible in the EDIT tab.
